As surveillance cameras gain popularity on the home security front, it’s important to know how to use them most effectively. Recent news reports have helped to highlight a serious security breach in many people’s use of security cams– more on that below– but there’s even more to know about using video to protect a home. Hardly a “set-it-and-forget-it” type of home security, these 15 tips will help you understand how to best protect your home and valuables through the correct use of surveillance cameras.
1. Change Your Passcode
Let’s immediately address a common security breach that’s been in the headlines. Recently, it was revealed that a certain website publishes live feeds from people’s surveillance cameras simply because homeowners are not taking the time to change the passcodes that come with the cameras. Factory codes make it too easy to hack into home security cameras and allow strangers to peer directly into homes while watching families from afar.
Having just checked the website (which we won’t publish here out of respect for people’s privacy) yesterday, I can attest to the fact that there are still plenty of live feeds on the site despite the fact that this story has been published internationally and has quickly spread throughout the blogosphere. Through it all, people either haven’t been paying attention to press warnings or they haven’t cared enough to take them seriously. Please, if you are one of these people, stop what you’re doing right now and change your passcode. To ignore this gives thieves, rapists and other criminals everywhere a front seat view of your home and family.
